Much of my art work shows what I've experienced first hand. I try to portray the west as I have lived it. If I put a cowboy on a horse he would be on a horse for a purpose. Action is very difficult to capture and this is an important part of any sculpture I make. My parents both instilled in me an honest appreciation for the west and for the peoples who played a part in its development. My father's grandmother was a full-blooded Sioux, half Sisseton, half Yankton. Her name was First Holy Woman. She married a blacksmith who had been with the seventh cavalry. Therefore, when I do a sculpture of the Indian people, I do so with an appreciation of what a resourceful people they were to survive in an environment that could be as harsh as any in the world.
